I’ve listened to many New Mexicans across the district and the main issues that folks are concerned about can be addressed —if we start working together and not shy away from real solutions.
New Mexico’s performance in education is unacceptable and must be reversed if our state is going to have a future. The stranglehold that the unions and the bureaucracy have on our children’s education must be boldly broken by leaders with courage and conviction. Our education system should be about outcomes for our students, NOT administrations, and unions.
This current closing of public schools has given a wake-up call to parents. Many realized they had more options available to them than they thought possible. Parents should have the right to choose the educational system that suits their children. Perhaps public education needed a reset like this in New Mexico. The most apparent change to come to education is online learning, which should be fully developed as soon as possible by the PED. Charter schools should also be fully supported to give families choices.
Public Safety and Emergency Services
Our first responders and law enforcement officers are true heroes and deserve our respect and support. They put themselves and their health and safety on the line every day on our behalf, even in times of crisis as we are seeing with COVID-19. As a state representative, I will always put them first, making sure they have the resources and support they need to do their jobs so our citizens can maintain their health and safety.
Grow New Mexico’s Economy
There is no reason why New Mexico’s economy should rank near the bottom nationally. The anti-growth policies pushed for decades by Santa Fe must be reversed if we are to have any hope of success. Taxes must be lowered, red tape cut, citizens prepared for work rather than dependency, and the anti-business attitude of the state government ended. We can unleash true prosperity for ALL New Mexicans if we follow the proven formula of free markets and fair regulations that have made our neighboring states economic powerhouses. We will not be left behind any longer!
With the current crisis we’ve seen what happens when Santa Fe spends too much without taking into account how dependent, our state revenues are on one industry: oil and gas. I will be a champion for fiscal responsibility and solid budget management in the legislature. We need to live within our means as a state, just like our families do. I will also focus on targeted tax relief at the state level, both for our senior citizens and our small businesses who are burdened with an excessive Gross Receipts Tax that discourages growth and prosperity.
Working for You
I introduced a resolution before the Dona Ana County Commissioners to request the Governor to give the people a plan to reopen small businesses that have been designated as “non-essential”. During the meeting we heard from many small business owners who shared their frustration being told to close while “Big Box Stores” were allowed to remain open. Working across party lines, we passed the resolution. See the news story below:
Listening to the families in the Butterfield Community has been absolutely rewarding. I will continue to be a voice for the people in my district but I need your help. Vote November 3rd for Isabella Solis.
